About The Game Dev Challenge imagine by NEOM (GDCN)

The Game Dev Challenge imagined by NEOM marks a significant step toward building a vibrant gaming ecosystem in Saudi Arabia. This innovative program goes beyond a simple competition; it is a carefully crafted STEM initiative designed to empower the next generation of game developers. By offering hands-on experience, professional mentorship, and access to cutting-edge resources, the challenge catalyzes digital innovation and economic diversification.

Shaping Tomorrow’s Innovators in the World of Gaming

The NEOM Game Dev Challenge directly reflects NEOM's broader vision to become a global hub for technology, media, and innovation. Recognizing the immense potential of the gaming industry, NEOM partnered with Maysalward—a leader in mobile game development in the Middle East—to create a program specifically targeting young talent in Saudi Arabia. This partnership is vital, combining NEOM's strategic foresight with Maysalward's practical expertise in game development.

The challenge primarily focuses on high school students aged 15 to 17. This age group is specifically chosen to engage young minds during a formative period, encouraging them to explore careers in STEM fields, particularly game development. The program is free for participating schools, making it accessible and inclusive. Each school can register up to four teams, with each team consisting of four students and one educator. This structure ensures a supportive learning environment, with educators facilitating the process and students collaborating on projects.
Curriculum and Skill Development

The curriculum of the NEOM Game Dev Challenge is designed to be comprehensive, covering various aspects of mobile game development. Participants receive hands-on training with professional tools and software, guided by experienced game developers from Maysalward.

The program emphasizes

  • Game Design Principles: where students learn the fundamentals of conceptualizing game mechanics, storytelling, and user experience.
  •  Technical Skills: Practical application of coding, graphic design, and sound integration necessary for game development.
  • Project Management: Team-based projects instill vital skills in planning, execution, and collaboration, mirroring real-world development cycles.
  • Innovation and Creativity: Encouraging participants to think outside the box and develop unique and engaging game concepts.
